Few will argue that GTs are the alpha predators on any Indian Ocean atoll flat. Many things have been said about them to try and describe their power and aggression. A school of trophy GT’s on the hunt is an impressive sight, their dominance on the flats clearly illustrated by everything else making way for them. When they get so big that they eat the very same 8lb bonefish you were catching that morning you know that you need a serious reel.

The Caranx is a big 12# reel, with an outer diameter of 4,52 inches and enough room to hold 300 yards of 80lb GSP and a 12 weight line. Weighing in at only 308 grams this makes it lighter than any of its competitors. You need the extra size for quick line retrieval and backing capacity; two elements of the fight where you will certainly be tested. Your drag must also be able to reach its maximum stopping power as soon as the fish is hooked to avoid it reaching the coral. With the Caranx you have all of this at your disposal, making it the ultimate GT reel.

The Chanos was designed for a 10 weight fly rod, which is an exceptionally versatile and demanding saltwater line weight that can be used for targeting a variety of species. You might use your 10 weight to target smaller laid up Tarpon or GT’s…but you know that once in a while you are going to hook a bigger fish that really was meant for a 12 weight. So you want to make sure that you have a drag system strong enough to stop hard running trophy sized fish. At other times you might target Long Tail Tuna and you’ll need to know that you have enough line capacity and a drag smooth enough to withstand those long runs. Or when the Permit are big and the flies heavy, you’ll need a drag delicate enough to protect light tippets when tussling with one of the most determined fighters, especially when it comes to handling those immensely powerful short bursts at the end of the fight.

Take all of these features and put them together and you have everything that makes the Milkfish (Chanos Chanos) such a special game fish and why the elements of the Chanos’s design are so unique. Firstly it has a massive 4,21inch diameter and holds a 10# line and 300yds 60lb GSP, yet weighs only 285grams. Not only is it bigger and lighter than any of its competitors, it also has more features.

Bonefish are known for their searing long runs. You need a drag strong enough to keep the fatties from reaching the edge of the flat, but at the same time it has to be smooth and constant enough to protect light tippets during sudden spurts and short runs at the end of the fight. Sight fishing whilst wading is the order of the day. Your reel is constantly being soaked, so it needs to be protected with a type 3 hard anodizing. The greater diameter and true large arbor of the Albula means that with a few quick slaps on the rim of the spool you can pick up line. The reel handle has an edgeless tapered design so fly line simply slides off it.

The Albula weighs in at 250grams and considering it has a 3,94 inch diameter it is the perfect 8 or 9 weight reel for the Indian Ocean. It holds an incredible 250 yards of backing with an 8 weight floating line. Best of all it is hugely versatile, doubling up perfectly as a Golden Dorado or Tigerfish reel.
